- 2 medium tomatoes, diced (about 12 oz / 350 g) - 1 medium cucumber, seeded if large and diced (about 8 oz / 225 g) - 1 medium red onion, finely chopped or thinly sliced (about 6 oz / 170 g) - 1 small green chili, finely chopped (optional) - 2 tbsp (30 ml) fresh lemon juice - 1 tsp (5 ml) neutral oil or extra-virgin olive oil (optional) - 2 tbsp (8 g) chopped fresh cilantro - 1/2 tsp (1 g) roasted cumin powder (bhuna jeera) - 1/4–1/2 tsp (1–2 g) chaat masala (optional) - Salt, to taste - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1. Trim and dice the tomatoes and cucumber to roughly uniform bite-sized pieces. Finely chop or thinly slice the red onion and finely chop the green chili if using. 2. Place the tomato, cucumber, onion, and green chili in a medium bowl. Sprinkle the roasted cumin powder and chaat masala over the vegetables. 3. Add the lemon juice, oil (if using), and chopped cilantro. Toss gently to combine, then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. 4. Let the salad rest 5–10 minutes at room temperature to allow flavors to meld, or chill briefly for a cooler salad. Taste and adjust lemon, salt, or chaat masala before serving.
