Ingredients

- 1 lb (454 g) ground beef
- 2 slices day-old white bread, torn, approx. 2 oz (56 g)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) milk
- 1 tsp (6 g) salt
- 1/2 tsp (1.5 g) ground black pepper
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) ketchup, plus extra for glaze
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) vegetable oil

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a small bowl, soak the torn bread in milk until softened, then squeeze out excess milk and mash into a paste.
2. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat; sauté the chopped onion until translucent and soft, then cool slightly.
3. In a large bowl combine ground beef, soaked bread, sautéed onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; mix gently until just combined. Form into a loaf shape and place in a loaf pan or on a baking sheet.
4. Spread 2 tbsp (30 ml) ketchup over the top of the loaf for glaze. Bake in the preheated oven until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C), about 50–60 minutes.
5. Let rest 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
