Ingredients

- 4 beef hot dogs, approx. 2.5 oz (70 g) each
- 4 hot dog buns
- 8 oz (225 g) ground beef
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) vegetable oil
- 1 small yellow onion, finely diced (about 3/4 cup / 110 g), plus extra for topping
- 1 cup (240 ml) water
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) tomato paste
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) chili powder
- 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) ground cumin
- 1 tsp (5 ml) apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp (5 ml) yellow mustard (in sauce)
- 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) salt
- 1/4 tsp (1.25 ml) black pepper
- 1 cup (113 g) finely shredded mild cheddar cheese
- Additional diced raw onion for topping (optional)
- Yellow mustard for serving

Instructions

1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat; add the diced onion and cook until soft, about 4 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking up, until browned, about 6–7 minutes.
2. Stir in water, tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, apple cider vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper; simmer uncovered over low heat about 12–15 minutes until a loose, saucy chili forms, adjusting thickness with more water if needed.
3. Grill or pan-cook the hot dogs until browned and heated through, about 4–6 minutes, then place each in a bun.
4. Spoon the hot beef chili over each hot dog, sprinkle with shredded cheddar, add diced raw onion if desired, and drizzle a little yellow mustard over the top. Serve immediately.
