Ingredients
- 4 beef patties, approx. 6 oz (170 g) each
- 1 tsp (5 g) kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp (1 g) freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) vegetable oil
- 4 hamburger buns
- 2 tbsp (30 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 slices (4 oz / 115 g total) cheddar cheese
- 4 leaves romaine or iceberg lettuce
- 1 medium tomato, sliced
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 8 dill pickle slices
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) ketchup
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) yellow mustard
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) mayonnaise
Instructions
1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about 400–450°F / 200–230°C). Lightly oil grates.
2. Season both sides of the beef patties with kosher salt and black pepper.
3. Brush patties with vegetable oil and place on the grill. Cook 3–4 minutes per side for medium, flipping once. In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheddar and close lid to melt.
4. While patties cook, butter the cut sides of buns and toast buttered sides on the grill until golden, about 30–60 seconds.
5. Assemble burgers: spread mayonnaise on bottom bun, add lettuce, tomato, one cheeseburger patty, onion, pickles, ketchup and mustard to taste, then top with the bun.
6. Serve immediately with your preferred sides (fries, coleslaw, or corn).
