- 3 cups (450 g) papaya, peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) cubes
- 1 cup (130 g) jicama, peeled and matchstick (optional)
- 3 tbsp (45 ml) fresh lime juice (about 3 limes)
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) agave nectar or honey (optional, to taste)
- 2 tbsp (20 g) Tajín or chile en polvo (such as ground chile piquín)
- 1/2 tsp (2.5 g) fine sea salt
- 2 tbsp (8 g) chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
- Lime wedges, to serve

Instructions

Short Description:
A bright, tangy Mexican fruit salad of watermelon, pineapple, and papaya tossed with fresh lime juice and chile for a spicy-sour finish. Chill briefly so the flavors meld and serve as a refreshing salad or snack.

Regional Notes:
This Jalisco-style ensalada de frutas highlights local tropical fruits—especially papaya—balanced with ample lime and chile en polvo or Tajín, reflecting Western Mexico's preference for bold, tangy, and spicy fruit preparations. Unlike cream-based fruit salads from other regions, this version stays fresh and citrus-forward with an optional touch of agave for sweetness.

1. Combine the watermelon, pineapple, papaya, and jicama (if using) in a large mixing bowl. Gently toss to mix.
2. In a small bowl or jar whisk together the lime juice, agave or honey (if using), Tajín or chile en polvo, and sea salt until the agave dissolves and the dressing is uniform.
3. Pour the dressing over the fruit and toss gently but thoroughly so each piece is lightly coated. Taste and adjust: add a bit more chile for heat, more lime for acidity, or a pinch more salt to brighten flavors.
4. Cover and chill the salad in the refrigerator for 15–30 minutes to let flavors meld (you can serve immediately if preferred).
5. Just before serving, fold in chopped cilantro if using. Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with lime wedges, and offer extra Tajín at the table for those who want an extra kick.
