Instructions
Short Description:
A creamy, herb-bright dip made with locally smoked Montana trout, cream cheese, and fresh herbs, served with crackers or toasted bread for sharing. Bright lemon and capers cut the richness, highlighting the smoky freshwater fish.
Regional Notes:
This Montana version centers on locally sourced smoked trout—a staple of the state's fishing culture—and uses simple dairy (cream cheese and sour cream) and fresh mountain herbs rather than heavy spices. It emphasizes flaky smoked trout and bright herbs, distinguishing it from ocean-based smoked fish dips farther west or creamier commercial spreads elsewhere.
1. Prepare the trout: check the smoked trout for any remaining bones and remove them. Flake the trout into small pieces with a fork and set aside.
2. Soften and mix base: in a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, and lemon juice and mix until fully combined and creamy.
3. Add seasonings: stir in the chopped chives, dill, green onions, capers, smoked paprika, cayenne (if using), salt, and pepper. If using, fold in the olive oil or melted butter for a silkier mouthfeel.
4. Fold in trout: gently fold the flaked smoked trout into the cream cheese mixture, leaving some larger flakes for texture. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or lemon juice as needed.
5. Chill to meld flavors: cover and refrigerate the dip for at least 30 minutes (preferably 1–2 hours) to allow flavors to develop. For a room-temperature serving, remove from fridge 20–30 minutes before serving.
6. Serve: transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with chopped parsley and a few extra chive pieces if desired, and accompany with crackers or toasted sourdough slices. Enjoy as a starter or snack celebrating Montana smoked trout.
