Ingredients
- 1.5 lb (680 g) ground beef, formed into 4 patties (approx. 6 oz / 170 g each)
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices (about 4 oz / 115 g total) American or cheddar cheese (1 slice each)
- 8 oz (225 g) button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced (about 6 oz / 170 g)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced (approx. 6 g)
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) butter
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) olive oil
- 1 medium tomato, sliced (about 5 oz / 140 g)
- 4 large iceberg lettuce leaves (for assembly)
- 1/2 cup (60 g) shredded carrot (optional slaw topping)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) vegetable oil or neutral oil for cooking patties
Instructions
1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with olive oil and butter. Add sliced onion and cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 6–8 minutes. Add sliced mushrooms and minced garlic and sauté until mushrooms are browned and liquid evaporates; season with salt and pepper. Remove from pan and keep warm.
2. Season ground beef patties with salt and pepper. Heat a separate griddle or heavy skillet with 1 tbsp vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Cook patties 3–5 minutes per side for medium (adjust to preferred doneness). Place a slice of cheese on each patty in the last minute of cooking and cover briefly to melt.
3. Lightly toast buns on the griddle. Assemble burgers with lettuce leaf on bottom bun, cheese-topped patty, tomato slice, a generous spoonful of sautéed mushrooms and onions, and shredded carrot if using. Top with bun and serve immediately.
