Ingredients

- 2 cups (400 g) long-grain white rice, uncooked
- 1.5 lb (680 g) ground beef, formed into 4 hamburger patties, approx. 6 oz (170 g) each
- 1 tsp (6 g) kosher salt, plus more to taste
- 1/2 tsp (1.5 g) freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) vegetable oil, divided
- 2 tbsp (28 g) unsalted butter
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced, approx. 4 oz (115 g)
- 3 tbsp (24 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (480 ml) beef broth
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp (5 ml) soy sauce
- 4 large eggs (approx. 200 g total)
- Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Cook the rice according to package instructions and keep warm.
2. Season the ground beef with 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper, form into 4 even patties, and set aside.
3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 tbsp vegetable oil. Sear the patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked to desired doneness; remove and keep warm.
4. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium, add the butter and remaining 1 tbsp oil. Add the sliced onion and sauté until soft and lightly caramelized, about 6–8 minutes.
5. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to form a roux, cooking 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, then add Worcestershire and soy sauce. Simmer and whisk until thickened to gravy consistency, about 4–6 minutes. Taste and season with remaining salt and pepper.
7. In a separate nonstick skillet, fry the eggs sunny-side up or to desired doneness.
8. Assemble: divide warm rice among 4 bowls or plates, top each with a hamburger patty, spoon gravy over the patties, and crown with a fried egg. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.
